Jo Avery

Jo Avery

Jo Avery is a designer who has been sewing and quilting for 25 years. For the past six years she has been teaching sewing classes at her Edinburgh studio. She creates quilts and other sewing projects for a wide range of publications.

Jo spent most of her childhood making toys and actually branched into dressmaking in her teens. She has synaesthesia, which means letters, words and numbers are in colour for her. Unsurprising, then, that her creations are always bursting with colour. Her mantras are 'more is more' and, in the words of Angela Walter, 'finished is better than perfect'. She’s always flitting between projects, from machine piecing to hand sewn appliqué, embroidery, foundation piecing, improv and back again.
