‘How To’ With SQ

HOW TO: Episode 6 – Seaside Striped Bag & Wool Waistcoat and Cap

Week 6 of our HOW TO: Series sees the SQ debut of one of the Great British Sewing Bee alumnus, Jamie Kemp.

We are excited to have Jamie on board as he demonstrates the making of a roomy, striped tote bag. Perfect for the seaside or a picnic and made with seaside-inspired, water-resistant fabric.

And we are keeping Jamie around to share his tailoring skills with us, creating a heritage-inspired, tailored waistcoat with matching cap. Both are made with Sewing Quarter’s exclusively designed new pure-wool checked fabric.

HOW TO: Episode 7 – Duffle Bag & Sculptural Silk Top

It’s the penultimate episode of our HOW TO: Series and in episode 7 our guest designer Rebecca Harrison joins us to make a Weekend Duffle Bag and a Sculptural Silk Top.

Using her expert dressmaking skills, Rebecca demonstrates how to create an amazing sculptural top inspired by origami and taken from the pattern-cutting book ‘Pattern Magic’ by Tomoko Nakamichi.

Rebecca shows us how to prepare the pattern to sew the fabric into the intricate shapes as seen on the catwalks. The top can be worn as it is or attached to a skirt to create a pretty party dress.

For inspiration, take a look at our Sculptural Garments Moodboard on Pinterest inspired by Tomoko Nakamichi. Share your favourites!

We will also be showing how to make a small duffle bag using a variety of simple bagmaking techniques.

HOW TO: Episode 8 – Satin Gown & Sumptuous Evening Bag

After a jam-packed final of the Great British Sewing Bee we bring you the final episode of our HOW TO: Series. And we are certainly going out with a bang with our formal wear Satin Strapless Gown and Sumptuous Evening Bag.

Eveningwear expert Helen Rhiannon will be showing us how to sew this sensational fabric into a chic strapless gown and shrug.

She will then be joining us to demonstrate how to use a smart metal frame and elegant rope chain to create the Pumpkin evening bag, as designed by Lisa Lam. This is the perfect accessory for the Satin Gown and can be made with jewel-toned velvet or satin fabrics, as seen on the show.

To watch our live demos with Helen Rhiannon tune in on Friday 5th April from 9am or catch up on our YouTube channel.
